Doesn’t it seem like before the holidays are even over, stores and fashion mags start rolling out the spring merch and trend reports? No matter that the weather is colder than ever and probably will stay that way for months. Personally, I find it’s sorta depressing to be teased by all the chic spring fashion you know you won’t be able to wear for another few months — especially all the open-toed footwear that won’t get to see the light of day until April or May. That’s why I’m ignoring the fashion calendar and focusing on things I can wear right now.
Here, are three fresh footwear trends I’m digging for the current season.
1. Smoking Slippers
Say hello to my new go-to flats this season. A modern-prep alternative to the ballet slipper or loafer that’s as chic as it is comfy and capitalizes on the borrowed-from-the-boys current that caters to my inner tomboy.

2. Over-the-Knee Boots
They came in to style a few seasons ago and have shown no sign of falling out of style — and I’m totally digging them. They’re a little edgier than riding boots and a bit sexier than the tough winter boots of past seasons. Plus, I like that they’re one of the few fashion-forward footwear styles that both men and women seem to be able to agree on (at least in my household). To men (like Andy, my fiancé), they are hot, hot, hot thanks to the resemblance to Julia Roberts’ Pretty Woman boots — and to women, they’re a perfectly acceptable way for those of us who are pretty conservative with our style to wear something overtly sexy without being overtly sexy. Though I tend to think heels and over-the-knee boots can veer too far into hooker boot territory, I can appreciate Miranda Kerr’s killer boots (note how she balances it with a chunky sweater dress), but for me, the flat versions like Pippa and Ginnifer Goodwin’s more classic versions are more my style. I decided to invest in a pair of flat over-the-knee black boots from Coach that I found on E-bay from last season and haven’t taken off since they arrived.

3. Hightop Sneakers
I loved these back in my youth, but never had the courage to diverge that far from the preppy topsiders and loafers of my youth, but this time, I won’t miss out on the chance to wear what I consider to be the coolest of kicks: hightop sneakers. I am obsessed with the hightops churned out by Isabel Marant and Chloe this season, but the Tory Burch and Michael Kors versions are much more my price range right now. I love how Kate Bosworth paired them with a pastel maxi skirt, as only she could do, but I’m also loving them with skinny jeans and leather pants a la Miranda Kerr, Alessandra Ambrosio and more.
